Deities

The Murugan fest

One of the prime attributes of the sacred site is the celebration around March. A fourteen-day affair is celebrated within the temple which marks the defeat of the evil Suran by Lord Murugan. The fest also celebrates the union of Murugan with Devasena which devotees come from all over the state to be a part of.

Construction

Something that is a major reason for its popularity is the fact that it has been carved out from a massive mountain that dates back to the Pandya rule of the eighth century. It is even believed that a special spot in the temple allows you to see both the sun and the moon.

Legends

It is well believed that the sacred site is the same spot where Lord Murugan married Goddess Devasena. This becomes the key reason why it is considered to be one of the most auspicious sites across India to get married with the blessings of the sacred couple.

Building

Several Hindu idols have been carved out of the Parankundram rock which adorns the sacred temple which is intricately built during the Pandyan rein. Several sculptures can be seen of Lord Shiva in his innumerable dance formes. The idols of Shiva and Vishnu built in a way that they face each other make it a prime attraction here. Several aesthetically pleasing Mandaps are something that the site is extremely famous for. Apart from this, there are several carved pillars and innumerable deities and mythological figures built here. Mahishasura, Nandi and several other idols can be seen here as well.

This gorgeous MADURAI TEMPLE opens its doors for worship at 5 am. It remains open till 1 pm. Thereafter, it opens again at 4 pm. Devotees throng inside the temple till 9 pm.
