About Srivilliputhur Andal temple

With various mythological images adorning the walls of the temple, innumerable legends doing rounds across the state about Lord Vishnu, the magnificent Raja Gopuram, the Andal Shrine and a lot of other things, the ancient site of the legendary Madurai temple is one of the best places to visit in Madurai and a must inclusion in every Madurai tour package.

Legend

It is believed that a female Andal was discovered right under the sacred plant of Tulsi at the site of the temple. It is said that she was found paying her respects to the deity with the garland that she had worn herself a little time back. The royal Alwar Periazhwar found out and aggressively ceased the ritual. Rumors have it that as a consequence of the Periazhwar dream of the Hindu Lord Vishnu, the process was resumed. In the dream, Lord Vishnu asked to resume the practice and dedicate him the same garland every day.

The massive 192 feet long Rajagopuram, the Andal Shrine, the granite wall are some of the best highlights of the temple. Apart from this, it is even believed to date that Lord Vishnu used to lie like a baby on the Vatapatram leaf of the ancient banyan tree here. Several images of mythological figures including Narada, Panchamurtis, the Sun Lord and the Moon Lord who can be seen standing beside the sacred feet of the Lord are found here as well. The sculpture of the Lord in his resting posture can be seen through three gateways. The intricate carvings on the wood make the Madurai temple a favorite among lovers of art.

The lavish temple of Srivilliputhur Andal is one of the most worshipped temples of the State and the nation situated in the historic district of Virudhunagar. It is believed that the temple dates back to even earlier than the eighth century. The renowned shrine of the Andal has undergone several reconstructions and renovations under several kings including the Alwars and the Nayaks.

Highlights

One of the fine highlights of the historic temple is that the Raja Gopuram of eleven long tiers which is also the iconic emblem of the government of the state itself. Apart from this the magnificent temple of the Hindu Lord Vishnu is counted one among the one hundred and eight Vishnu Divya Desams across the nation.

The car festival is one of the grandest festivals to be celebrated at this temple complex. During this festival, Sri Andal’s, as well as Lord Rajamannar’s idols, are taken out in a procession through the streets. 

Srivilliputhur Andal Temple opening and closing time

This Madurai temple opens its doors for devotees at 6 am and remains open till 1 pm. In the evening, it opens again from 4 pm till 9 pm.

Visitors are requested to wear normal decent clothes. Shorts and skirts are not allowed.
