Dwarahat is approximately 14 miles away from the Dunagiri temple. The Temple is a shrine to the goddess Durga. A portion of the mountain is thought to have fallen here. Hanuman Ji was carrying "Sanjiwani Buti" for Laxman, which is why this location is popular "Doonagiri" (the word "Giri" means fell). History of Dunagiri Temple

The Dunagiri Temple is said to have been constructed by the Pandavas during their legendary exile, which accounts for its ancient beginnings. The Temple has many different stories, information and history, creating a mystery for travelers. As you approach the Temple, an aura of antiquity fills the air. It invites you into a world where time seems to have stood still. 

A significant component of the hallowed Dronachal temple is the Dunagiri Temple. Legends from the Ramayana era state that Lord Hanuman undertook a significant mission. Lord Laxman required unique medicinal herbs (Sanjiwani) from the Himalayas during this time.

Lord Hanuman transported the priceless Sanjivani Buti from India to Sri Lanka, which could sustain life. However, along the route, a tiny fragment of the herb dropped at one location. This special place has been famous as Dunagiri ever since. The Temple is a component of the more incredible Dronachal temple. 

How many steps are there in the Temple?

The roughly 500 stairs of the Dunagiri Mata Temple are entirely under the shed. Tourists can visit the Temple all year. The Dwarahat is another must-see places to visit in Almora near Ranikhet. 

As you climb the hill leading to the Temple, a magnificent view of the surrounding area opens up in front of the Temple.
