Kasar Devi Hamlet is one of the best places to visit in Almora, as it is an undiscovered gem. The town gets its name from the local goddess of the same name, Kasar Devi. In the neighborhood of Almora, a popular pilgrimage site is a Devi temple built in her honor. The sweeping, breathtaking vista of the valleys, rivers, and hamlets is the only thing that can stop the tranquility that abounds at Kasar Devi.

Kasar Devi history

Kasar Devi first gained widespread recognition in the 1890s. During Swami Vivekananda's visit, he meditated and wrote about his experiences in his diaries. Walter Evans-Wentz, a pioneer in studying Tibetan Buddhism who subsequently translated The Tibetan Book of the Dead, lived here for a while.

In the 1930s, Tibetan Buddhist Lamas, writers, and artists like Anagarika Govinda, Li Goutami, and Sunyata Baba stayed in the area. Post-hippie, it became famous for its peaceful atmosphere and meditation.
