Most of the small to medium-sized temples in the complex of Lord Shiva are in ruins. The complex also contains a substantial tiered temple tank. Shivalingas are still present in various temples even if no ongoing poojas are performed here.

Because it is a unique sacred complex, the Jyotirlinga Temple Group is a well-liked tourist destination. As ardent followers of Lord Shiva, the Rashtrakuta dynasty dedicated the entire complex to him. All around India, several Shivalingas are present to represent the Jyotirlingas. Along with Shivalingas, other Hindu deities like Lord Ganesha, Kartikeya, Ardhanareeswara, etc., have statues carved out of rock. This structure also has a group of Nandi idols from Nandi Mandapa.

Architecture of Jyotirlinga Temple Complex

The Jyotirlinga complex of temples was constructed between the VIII and X century CE. Two temples with Kadambanagara Shikhara, a few with flat roofs, a few Mantapas with Basavanna, and a Kalyani comprise the group. Sabha Mantapa and Shukanasi are two temples with sanctuaries. The current location of these temples is within a triangle enclosure close to the Durga temple complex.

The east-facing temple consists of a sanctum, sabha mandapa, and Mukha mandapa, supported by eight pillars. The sabha mandap features sculptures of Ganesha, Saptamatrikas, and lions. The north-facing temple has a Mukha mandapa, Antrala, and sanctum, supported by sixteen pillars. The Antrala no longer has a roof, and its square sanctuary houses a Shiva Linga.

The east-facing temple consists of a sanctum, Antrala, sabha mandapa, and Mukha mandapa. Despite the absence of the Mukha mandapa, you can see Gajalakshmi in the Sabha Mandapa. The sanctum of the temple has four central pillars and an elevated platform. It also has a Kannada inscription that is all partially broken.
