1 toMeguti Jain Temple is located on a mound (formerly a Buddhist Temple) southeast of the Durga Temple Complex, inside the medieval walls of Aihole.
From the peak, one can see the entire hamlet of Aihole and its landmarks. The walls are all that remain of the supposed Aihole Fort, which was located atop the hill. Include the temple in your tour while planning for the Aihole tour package.
A flight of stairs leads to the hill, which you may access via the Mallikarjuna Temple Complex or the hamlet. Tourists can use the stairs to approach the temple from the main road. The approach road is exceedingly filthy until a few steps from the main road. The temple of Aihole is a must among the places to visit in Aihole.
History of Meguti Jain Temple
One of the temples of the Galaganatha Group of Temples, the Jain Meguti Temple, is on a raised platform on a hill in Aihole. According to the inscriptions on the temple, Ravikeerthi, a general and minister of Pulakesin II, built this shrine in 634 AD.
Although the temple was never built, its carvings are more intricate than other temples from the same era. The temple contains a massive statue of Lord Mahavira sitting and an attractive yet slightly deformed statue of Goddess Ambika.
This temple, built without mortar and currently in ruins, was created in the Dravidian style. Tourists must visit this temple to take in the stunning vista of more than 100 shrines. The Jain Meguti Temple once had a massive, pillared Mukha mandapa, 16 porch columns, a superstructure that extends above the sanctum wall, and an addition to the hall.
