Among some of the major places to visit in Chikmagalur is the Kudremukh National Park. The location is profoundly beautiful, and it is situated with mountains on its sides. In the year 1987, the Kudremukh National Park was officially granted the national park status. In the state, this national park is one of the most popular tourist attractions and is included in any Chikmagalur tour package. The entire park is spread over 600 square km area, and the high rising mountains, along with the variety of plants and animals, makes the place heavenly at times.

The grasslands provide a safe home to many animals of the wild, and the Kudremukh National Park is the second-largest protected wildlife area in the entire Western Ghats zone. In Chikmagalur tourism, the exploration of the Kudremukh National Park is one of the major highlights. With the natural beauty of the place kept intact, the Western Ghats provides excellent details about the land which can be thoroughly enjoyed by any nature lover.

History

The name of this area mainly comes from the local language. In various other Chikmagalur tourist places, the names are all local. The meaning of Kudremukh is horse face, and it is given as the tallest mountain peak looks like a horse face from the side. Initially, the place was developed as a mining town for iron ore. It affected the environment adversely. With much campaigning, the natural beauty of the area and the peace of the local wildlife, consisting of leopards, wild dogs, and tigers have been preserved.

Height of Kudremukh

The height of the tallest mountain peak is 6214 feet or 1894 meters. In Karnataka, this is the second-highest mountain. Trekking is one of the top things to do in Chikmagalur. Every year, a lot of tourists come to the Kudremukh National Park for wildlife and nature and also trek the Kudremukh Mountain for experiencing an unmatched adventure.
