Lama Rigdzin Longyang opened the monastery in 1718 AD. It is part of the Nyingmapa group, also known as the Red Hat group. History says that Lama Dorjelingpa and his son Rigdzin Longyang built the monastery after coming from Tibet during the invasion of Tibet by the Mongol king Junggar in 1717 and 1718 AD. They rebuilt the church three times, in 1840, 1920, and 1984, because earthquakes damaged it so often.
