History of Golf Course Kodaikanal.

Do you know that the golf course in Kodaikanal is 116 years old? Well, for all the avid golfers who are always searching for verdant golf courses throughout the country, Kodaikanal’s golf course is a boon from god! It was on 17th June 1895 that the Kodaikanal Golf Club was founded by 12 English golfers who fell in love with the serene ambiance of the terrain. 

Surrounded by lush green grassland and bejeweled by crystal clear streams and hills, Kodaikanal’s golf course is a must for those tourists that love amidst nature’s bounties. The golf club is famous for its 18 hole golf course and is situated at a height of 2,220 meters. It lies about four miles southwest from Kodaikanal, and is closely situated to a very famous tourist spot  ‘Suicide Point’. 

Most golfers visit the club because they want to experience the natural beauty surrounding the golf course and the bounty of wildlife that can be spotted on it.  The 18 hole course is spread on 150 acres of lush green land and is 5,876 meters in length. The 18 holes have interesting names, each associated with a respective challenge. These are Old Long’un, Plateau, Hoping, Devil’s Pit, Pulpit, Tiger, Hill Side, Punch Bowl, Pimples, Saddle, Overhill, Sentinel, Twister, Majestic, New Long’un, Roadside, Sure Shot and Home. Of all these holes, the 6th hole has an interesting reason for it to be named Tiger. In its early days, golfers could spot tigers roaming around here and there! Though you need to be a member to play golf here, the club allows non-members to play by taking temporary membership of the club. You can also pay fees to play golf. However, you need to have golf disability, or else, take golfing lessons before playing. The club has more than 600 members that love to come here to enjoy its many facilities. Guests can learn to putt and drive under professional guidance. There is a practice net for beginners. 

The Kodaikanal golf course has hosted many championships. Some famous championships that are hosted here are Veday and Rudrappan Memorial Cup that draw hundreds of golf addicts each year. In the year 2008, it hosted 56 golf championships.
