The road to Pillar Rocks is of course not at all difficult, but, its nevertheless breathtakingly awesome! This spot is undoubtedly one of the best Kodaikanal tourist place.

The site was given its name, courtesy the three vertical rocks that stand up to reach 400 feet in height. It is most popular among the local residents that picnic here on holidays as well as on days that are clear of fog and cloud. This is a spot which is one of the places to visit in Kodaikanal in 1 day.

The place has its own tale of love and tragedy to tell. David Gelli and his newly wedded wife died at this very spot many many moons ago. Gelli often visited Kodai and once made a trip down here with his new wife named Irine Gelli. Tragedy befell upon them when Irine fell from the Pillar Rocks while engaged in a photography session with her husband. In his grief, David went to the top of the boulders and planted a white cross. After a couple of days, he went back to the top and supposedly jumped off. 

The above-mentioned tale of love is hardly known by tourists. Only locals can tell you this story with their own endings and logic! However, if you are to visit Pillar Rocks now, you wouldn't spot that white cross as it was damaged again and again over the years. The site enthralls everyone that comes looking for some quietude. The mini garden here is perfect for spending some ‘alone’ time whilst soaking in the bounties of mother nature. It is perfect for families with kids too. 

The lawns of the garden are maintained at all times and seasons. One must come here to see the scenic carpets of colorful blooms that make the air fragrant. Local shops here sell many kinds of snacks, but, it is suggested that you give a try to the famous hot chilli bhajia that’s the USP of the spot. 

Important information for visitors

• The site opens from 9 in the morning till 4 in the evening.
• There is some entry fee that you have to give. Its Rs 5 for every person. If you are carrying a still camera, you need to pay Rs 20.
• Visit the site in the months of April, May, and June. Avoid coming here during the rainy season as it can get dangerously slippery. 
• It can be accessed from the bus station at Kodai which is positioned at 7.5 kilometers away. You can hire a cab or take the local bus.
