History
The construction of the Bom Jesus church finished on 15th May 1605 with the efforts of Alexia de Menezes. The saint’s corpse was taken back to Portugal when he passed away. However, it came back and was housed here after a wait of two long years. The magical saint as he was popularly called, rests in a mausoleum at this church. His remains are preserved inside a coffin, and the public can view it when they come to this Basilica.
