Chapora Fort Goa Tourism

This fort is one of the best places to visit in Goa. The place where this fort is built is the very point where the River Chapora meets the Arabain Sea. It can be seen rising from the river and is only 10 km from Mapusa. This North Goan tourist site nestles itself atop a hill and overlooks the Vagator and Chapora Beaches on either side. Laterite rocks were used to construct the facade of this fort which features stone walls, murder holes, gun ports and ramparts. This fort is very popular in Goa tour packages, so we must visit this place.

The Unique Experience

Who can forget Aamir Khan and his boy gang from the movie Dil Chahta Hai? Well, to tell you, this hit movie was shot at Chapora Fort in Goa! So, this makes visiting this fort a priority over any other place! The chilled-out atmosphere of the fort attracts people from all over. Chapora Fort’s parapet is famed for taking leisurely walks and enjoying the views of beaches like Morjim, Chapora, Ozran and Anjuna.

If this is not enough to pull you here, the fort is heaven for ‘paleophiles’ who want to enrich themselves with Goan history as well as understand all about military defence and architecture.

Chapora Fort timings starts from 9:30 AM, and it closes on 5:30 PM.

Legend

Built by Bijapur ruler Adil Shah, this fort of Goa was invaded by the Portuguese in the year 1717 and converted it into an outpost for stopping enemy attacks. The Chapora Fort was believed to be unbreachable due to its strong walls. Also, people held the notion that the walls of the fort could never be climbed till Shivaji’s son Sambhaji conquered it with his massive Maratha Army.

Chapora Fort History

Chapora Fort was built in the year 1717. Many rules held this fort for particular periods. Between Marathas and Portuguese, an intense enmity was grown to get control over it. Though this fort was built to serve as a place for strategic influence, but the fort fell very quickly.

More About the Chapora Fort Goa

Though, mostly you will find a ruined look here, yet, there is something very enticing to visit Chapora Fort that hasn’t been in use since 1892. The parapet of this fort has a walking pathway that offers scope for taking evening strolls. There are a few military barracks as well as tombstones of Muslim rulers. The evenings are perfect for enjoying looking at the painted sky and the majestic Arabian Sea.

What else?

Among other things, you can visit Anjuna as well as Vagator Beach that is located close-by. The Mapusa Market is also positioned close by and can be visited. The fish market at Siolim is yet another spot if you wish to buy fresh sea fish.
