This temple is one of the best places to visit in Goa. Consigned to Goddess Shantadurga, the temple belongs to Saraswat Brahmins of Goa and is positioned amidst lush green terrain, about 30 km away from Panjim. This 450-year-old temple was constructed by Naroram Mantri between 1713 to 1738 AD. Most Goa'n Hindus worship the goddess, calling her Santeri. According to mythology, she was called by Brahma to settle the great clash of Vishnu and Shiva. After settling the fight, she planted on her right hand-Vishu, while, on her left, she planted Shiva.

History of Shantadurga Temple Fatorpa
Anu ShenaiMone, a rich merchant of Keloshi, erected the original temple. In 1566, the Portuguese razed it to the ground. The Brahmins of Keloshi then left their homes along with the images of Lord Mangesh and Goddess Shantadurga. They reached Kavalem and installed the deity.
More About the Shantadurga Temple
The village of Kavalem was inhabited by Harijans when the deity was installed at a small house there. It later transformed into a small shrine with their help. Every year on the day of Magha Shukla Shashthi, Harijans are invited by the authorities and presented with the goddess’s saree, blouse and coconut.
Built by Naroram Mantri, the temple still recognizes his valuable contribution towards its creation and gives his descendants the highest form of respect. There is a place at the temple reserved, especially for his descendants where they can perform aarti and pujas. There is a spot called Mantri Khamb at the temple that is also reserved for them.
What else?
There are three smaller temples erected as well. Kashmir stones were used to build the temple’s pillars. Foreigners are not allowed to enter the temple. This temple is a mandatory place to visit in Goa tour packages.
