Sri Poornathrayeesa Temple – Tripunithura

The Poornathrayeesa Temple is situated at Tripunithura, and it is one of the most famous places to visit in Kochi. From Ernakulam, this temple lies in the southeastern side. The place Tripunithura is also known as the Land of Temples, with Sri Poornathrayeesa Temple being a significant attraction. As per mythology, Lord Arjuna from Mahabharata founded this temple. The deity of this temple is Sri Poornathrayeesa, which is Lord Vishnu. The temple was ravished by fire almost a century ago, and the current temple has been revamped after the incident.

Naming

In any Kochi tour package, three major Vishnu temples are included. Sri Poornathrayeesa Temple is one of them. From its architecture, it is quite evident that the temple was built solely to devote it to Lord Vishnu. The name Poornathrayeesa comes from the pose that is uniquely given by Lord Vishnu in this temple. This temple in the country is the only one where such a posture can be seen in any Lord Vishnu deity. Hence, the name Sri Poornathrayeesa was given.

Festivals

The Sri Poornathrayeesa Temple is a major part of Kochi tourism due to the annual festivals that are held there. Vrishchikoltsawam is the primary festival, and it usually is held on either November or December. On the fourth day of the festival, elephants are decorated and taken out, along with a raised platform where a golden pot is kept. This is a donation platform, with the goodwill of offerings to get blessings and luck.

Being one of the top Kochi tourist places, a lot of visitors also attend the famous Athachamayam festival. It is held at the same time when the Onam festivals go on, and procession and dance performances such as Pulikkali are the main attractions. These festivals attract thousands of devotees from all over the country.
