The Pap Mochini Temple, also known as the Gayatri Mata Temple, is a sacred site for the followers of Hinduism. This is one of the religious PLACES TO VISIT IN PUSHKAR. Located in the northern peak of the city, the Pap Mochini Temple is believed to have the power to forgive and be free from all sins, which is what 'Pap Mochini' literally means. Many of the PUSHKAR PACKAGES include this temple among the various other religious places to visit in the city indeed.
Pap Mochini Temple Legends and History:
The Pap Mochini Temple belongs to Gayatri, the Gujjar girl whom Lord Brahma is said to have married to avoid delaying a 'Yajna' instead of waiting for his wife, Savitri. This is the reason why Savitri is said to have cursed Lord Brahma, saying that he would not be worshipped anywhere apart from Pushkar. This temple is thus, often referred to as Gayatri Peeth.
Another mythological reference where the Pap Mochini Temple played a vital role is that of the Epic Mahabharata. Lord Krishna cursed Ashwatthama and said that his soul would have to roam about Earth for three thousand years before he got salvation. So, people still believe that his soul visits the Pap Mochini Temple once every year to seek salvation indeed.
