Historical facts and Legends:
The Varaha Temple was constructed around the 12th century under the rule of King Anaji Chauhan of the famous Rajput dynasty. This temple, however, like many other temples in the area, was destroyed by the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. The temple was then rebuilt by Raja Sawai Jai Singh II of the Rajputana dynasty, who restored various other temples in the area too.
According to various interesting local legends, Lord Vishnu was incarnated in a boar form when a demon called ‘Hiranyaksha’ tried to cross the Gods in heaven. Hiranyaksha tried to sink the Earth beneath the water body, as a resistance to which Lord Varaha fought and finally restored peace and serenity of Earth. Since then, people have worshipped Lord Varaha here.
Varaha Temple Architecture and facts:
The majestic Varaha Temple building is in the Marwadi-Rajasthani style of architecture. Inside the sanctum-sanctorum of the temple stands a two feet idol of Lord Varaha. Not only does this temple contain Lord Vishnu’s incarnation, but also the idols of Lords Brahma and Shiva. The walls and compounds of the temple contain other various idols of other Gods and Goddesses, mythical creatures, and also the Mother Goddess called ‘Pundarigavalli.’ The temple is approximately 150 meters high. The ‘Parikrama’ path, or revolutionary path that connects the temple to the Pushkar lake ghats, is 7 kilometers long. Visitors may take this path and reach the beautiful Ghats of Pushkar for an enriching experience of aarti or just sit by the lake and admire its timeless beauty.
