Located right in the middle of the city, Pushkar Lake is a unique and special place in the city of Rajasthan. It is not like a pool to swim in—it is considered a hallowed spot for the Hindus to worship God; it comprises several temples and ghats. The lake is beautiful and forms a significant part of the tour packages to Pushkar. If you are planning a trip to Pushkar, then this lake should be on the top of your places to visit in Pushkar.

Why is Pushkar Lake sacred?

The Lake is considered sacred because it is said to have been created by Lord Brahma, the god of creation in Hinduism. As the Hindu stories go, Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower from his hand, which fell to Earth, thus creating this lake. A dip in the lake's holy waters purifies one of his sins and brings him good luck, according to legend. On festivals, many pilgrims visit the lake for a sacred water dip.

What is the story behind Pushkar Lake?

Hindu mythology tells an interesting story about how the Lake came to be. The story starts with Lord Brahma, who is seen as the creator god in Hinduism. According to legend, Lord Brahma, who made the world, was on a mission to perform a yagna, a holy ritual, for the good of all living things. He did, however, need to find a good place for the yagna, and as he looked around, he came across Pushkar.

As Lord Brahma looked for a place to do the yagna, he saw a lotus flower fall from his hand. The lotus flower landed in Pushkar. Water sprang up from the ground where it hit, making the beautiful Pushkar Lake. Lord Brahma chose the city as the best place for the yagna because of the beautiful and peaceful lake.

Is swimming allowed?

Yes, people can swim in India's Pushkar Lake. The lake has 52 swimming ghats, which are steps that lead into the water. Hindus see the lake as a holy place. Some people think that bathing in its water can wash away sins and heal skin problems. Many pilgrims visit the lake during the Kartik Poornima holiday in October or November, also when the Pushkar Fair occurs.

How many ghats are there around Pushkar Lake?
