Gandhamadana Mountain Lord Hanuman

The legendary parvatha or mountain is said to be the abode of Hanuman. Its believed that from the top of this mountain, Lord Hanuman took a flight to Lanka. This mountain also housed the rare Sanjeevani herb that cured Lakshmana and brought him back to life.

The ancient legend

The legendary spot is famous because of its mythological legend well mentioned in holy books as well. It is said that during the ultimate war between the great demon Ravana's army and the Lord Hanuman and Lord Rama's army, Rama's younger sibling Lord Lakshmana got injured with a venomous arrow. It was suggested by Jambavana that the only thing that could cure the venom and save Lakshmana was the Sanjeevani herb. The rare herb could only be found on this sacred hill located at one extreme end of the Indian-subcontinent, located firmly in the Himalayas. The beloved Lord Hanumana flew all the way to look for it and bring it back. Once he reached, he couldn't differentiate between the various herbs growing there. Using his massive powers and chants of Rama, he transformed into the enormous size and decided to bring the entire hill here on his shoulders.

The name of the temple

The renowned temple called the 'Ramjharokha temple' on this hill with innumerable medicinal herbs literally translates in the English language as 'where Rama waited'. The impression of the Hindu lord on a huge chakra can be seen placed here which is worshipped by the devotees. Placed at the highest point of the hill make it quite a popular attraction in Rameshwaram.
