The most beautiful temple in Alampur is Kudala Sangameshwara Temple. Chalukya king Pulakesi II built it in 740 AD, and travellers often include it in Alampur tour packages because of its stunning architecture and historical significance.

The temple used to be 10 km from its current location, at the junction of the Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers. In 1979, it was taken apart and rebuilt rock-to-rock at its current location because the original site was flooding due to the construction of the Srisailam Dam.

Unique Features of Kudala Sangameshwara Temple

One of the places to visit in Alampur is the Kudala Sangameshwara Temple in Bagalkot, Karnataka, a beautiful example of Chalukyan architecture. The builders built this temple in the 1100s, and the place is adorned with minute carvings of scenes from Hindu mythology, especially on the pillars. The style is a combination of both Dravidian and Chalukyan styles, and there is a beautiful chamber which accommodates Lord Shiva. Its peaceful setting closes to the Krishna and Ghataprabha rivers makes it even more appealing.

Religious Importance of Kudala Sangameshwara Temple

The Kudala Sangameshwara Temple is an important place to visit to honour Lord Shiva. Due to its spiritual and historical importance, followers especially adore it during Maha Shivaratri. The temple also has a cultural connection to Saint Basavanna, making it more significant. It is at the point where the Krishna and Ghataprabha rivers meet, making it a peaceful place to pray and meditate.

Architectural Marvels of the Temple

The Sangameswara Temple is a beautiful building with carvings on every part. It follows the Nagara style and sits on a raised platform. The builders reinforced a wall around the temple. The temple has a big hall with 12 columns and a shrine. Pradakshinas can walk around the temple on a road that goes around it. Like other Chalukya shrines, this one significantly relieves Nagaraja on the roof. There are beautiful carvings of Lord Vishnu, Brahma, Kumaraswamy, and a celestial couple on the hall's walls.

On the front of the outside wall are images of Ardhanareeswra and Ganesha. The doorway shows Ganga and Yamuna. The outside fence features detailed carvings of Siva killing a monster, Harihara, Manmadha, Yama, and Shiva with 18 hands, resembling the one in Badami caves. Crocodiles are carved into all four sides of the building. You can see a person inside the crocodile's mouth in one area. From each side, the human figure looks different, like a kid, a young adult, or an older person. Toranas are cut into the outside walls of lattice windows.
