Significance of Taraka Brahma Temple in Alampur

Alampur is a holy town called the "Gateway to Srisailam." The Taraka Brahma Temple is one of the most important places to visit. This temple, like those of the holy Navabrahma shrines, stands as the heart and soul of God in all His power and creation. The temple has sculptures and inscriptions that are evidence of the great artistic talents of the Chalukyan kingdom and serves as inspirations to the spiritual seeker.

Architectural Brilliance of Taraka Brahma Temple

The temple has a mukhamandapa with six columns and a small mandapa with a shrine. An attack by the Bahamani Sultans in the 1400s led to the destruction of this temple, prompting the relocation of its Shivalinga to the Rama and Lakshmana temple. While a small part of the vimana remains intact, most lies in ruins. Sculptors carved a picture of Gajalakshmi on top of the mandapa.

The Rashtrakutas built a big stone gate in the 8th century, which now leads to the western side of this temple. There is a figure of Trimurthis on the top of the entryway. There is a beautiful carving of a deer teaching Vilasatraja. Beyond the entrance is a doorway and the remains of a fort that the Vijayanagara Kings built in the 1400s.
