History of Bhujia Hill Fort

Bhujia Hill Fort, also famous as Bhujia Fort, is on a hill overlooking the town of Bhuj. The fort is on top of the Hill and got its name from the temple of the serpent god Bhujanga, located on top of the Hill. According to history, Jadeja Chief Rao Godaji erected the Bhujia Fort between 1715 and 1718 CE. However, his son, Deshalji I, built the fort.

The fort stood up to six major conflicts between Rajput kings of Kutch, Muslim raids from Sindh, and Mughal rulers of Gujarat between 1700 and 1800 AD. William Coir, a British colonel, took over the fort in 1819. The Indian Army has occupied the fort since India's independence in 1947. The soldiers left the fortress in 2001.

Temples on the Fort Hills

The Bhujang Nag Temple is the most notable in the area. The temple is in honour and respect to the god of snakes. It has a dome structure that looks like a Chhatri, meaning an umbrella. Naga Sadhus, a devotee of the Hindu god, constructed the temple.

The Bhujang Nag temple celebrates the Nag Panchami festival every year and attracts many tourists. The festival happens during the Hindu calendar's Shravan month. The temple also organises a fair on the same day when the Chhatri came into existence at the temple.
