Hamirsar Lake is an artificial lake in the middle of Bhuj, Gujarat. It is the largest artificial Lake in the Kutch region and one of Bhuj's top places to visit.
The Lake is 28 acres and has a beautiful garden in the middle of the park. The garden was previously famous as Green Island but is now popular as Rajendra Park.
The place is also suitable for walking in the morning and evening. Walking along the lakeshore offers a beautiful view of the Aina Mahal, Prag Mahal, Kutch Museum, Ram-kund Step well, Swaminarayan Temple, Sharad Baug Palace, and Royal Chhatardis. Visitors can also see many migratory birds in the Lake throughout the winter.
History of the Hamirsar Lake
This 450-year-old Lake, named for Bhuj's founder, Rao Hamir, was built during Rao Khengarji I's reign (1548-1585). The dam of the Lake was built during the reign of Pragmalji II, with additional renovations made during the reign of Khengarji III. Historically, the Lake was mainly used to meet Bhuj's household needs.
The Lake was built with a waterway and tunnels that carried water from three rivers to the town's reservoirs. This water system was destroyed by the Gujarat earthquake in 2001. In 2003, the municipality and residents of Bhuj restored the water system to its previous shape, making the water in Hamirsar Lake potable.
The best time to visit
The best time to visit Hamirsar Lake in Bhuj is during the milder months, typically from October to March.
August of Hamirsar is a unique celebration in Bhuj when the lake overflows during the monsoon season. The festival has been happening since the reign of the ancient monarchs.
When the Lake overflowed, the King would perform a Puja and serve sweets as prasad to the people of Kutch. The locals perform Puja as a thank you to the Almighty and welcome new water into the Lake. The Hamirsar lake is a must visit during the Bhuj tour package.
