The Banasura Sagar dam in Wayanad is located on the river of Karamanathodu in Kalpetta. This river is one of the tributaries of Kabini River. This dam is the second largest dam ever built in the whole of Asia, and the largest in the entire country. As a result, this dam is one of the top places to visit in Wayanad.

The formation of the islands is seen during the monsoon season when the reservoir submerges the nearby area. During that time, the island provides an excellent scenic location with the Banasura hills present in the back. This is a rare thing to witness, and this makes the dam a significant part of Wayanad tourism. Located close to this dam is the Karalad Lake, which as another major attraction of Wayanad.

Banasura Sagar Dam history
The name of this dam came from the nearby Banasura hills. King Mahabali was a famous ruler of Kerala, who had a son named Banasura. The name Banasura hills came as Banasura was believed to have undergone extreme penance on the hilltop. This hill ranks third in height among the peaks of Western Ghats.
The Banasura Sagar project was initiated in 1979, which was created for supporting the Kakkayam Hydroelectric power project. The location of the dam is around 21 km from Kalpetta.

The entry fee is Rs.10 per head. The dam can be visited every day from 6 AM to 6 PM.
