Originally called Ajaymeru Durg, Taragarh fort is built upon a steep hillside in Ajmer in Rajasthan. The fort stands at the height of 1300 feet above ground level. Ajaypal Chauhan constructed this fort in 1354, making it one of the oldest forts in India. The defence was well known for its strength and strategic importance.
Taragarh fort witnessed the defeat of Muhammad of Gazni. He laid down his siege with his wounds so he couldn't tackle the defence force and thus failed to take the fort. After defeating Governor Mallu Khan in the 15th century, Prithiviraj, son of Maharana Rainal, took the Taragarh fort. The Taragarh fort stands like a giant at the height of about 1300 feet above ground level, built by the founder ruler of the city, Ajaypal of the Chauhan dynasty. Prithviraj Chauhan was the last Hindu ruler of the fort until Qutb-ud-Din-Aibak defeated him. Now the fort is easily accessible by a serpentine motor road. The fort consists of six important gates, namely Laxmi Pol, Phuta Darwaza, Bada Darwaza, A Bhawani Pol, Mathi Pol and Arkot Darwaza. Being at such a great height, it provides a magnificent view of the city situated in Nag Pahari of the Aravalli range, which makes it very popular amongst the tourists as well as the locals.
