One of the most exciting places to visit in Jaisalmer is the Jaisalmer Fort. The fort is extremely famous for being the live fort or one of the oldest forts worldwide that is still inhabited. It is located in the Golden City of India. This stunning building, which sits proudly on top of Trikuta Hill 250 feet above the ground, is an actual work of architecture.

The fort is like a small town in the Thar Desert. Moreover, it has walls that are 30 feet high, along with many entrance gates. In addition, houses, shops, hotels, restaurants, and churches are within its boundaries. Consequently, about 3000 people live in the fort, and people consider it one of the most popular tourist spots in the state.

What is unique about Jaisalmer Fort?

Many Rajput and Brahmin families still live in Jaisalmer Fort, India's only living fort. The fort is a popular place for tourists to visit in Jaisalmer, and many Jaisalmer tour packages include it as a must-see destination. However, it is no longer an essential military post or trade hub. UNESCO named the site a World Heritage Site in 2013.

Who built Jaisalmer Fort?

The history of Jaisalmer Fort is fascinating. It has been through many fights with the Mughals, Tughalaqs, Khiljis, and Rathore Kings. Kings Rawal Jaisal and Jaisal built the fort in 1156 AD. It did have a fortified defence building called Rang Burj, which was added to it by Rawal Jethsi in 1276 AD, though, after the Sultan of Delhi Alauddin Khilji attacked it twice.

What are the main attractions inside Jaisalmer Fort?

It is an architectural masterpiece fusion of the Mughal and the Rajput styles. Jaisalmer Fort, having yellow sandstone palaces, homes, churches, wells, and Havelis, has bright colours that make it distinct.

•    These entrance gates, called Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol, Bhoot Pol, and Hawa Pol, were massive and beautifully carved.

•    Beautiful carvings and designs are carved out on windows, doors, balconies, and archways.

•    There are several beautiful houses and buildings from the Jain and Hindu cultures. The Digambara shrines are built in the famous Dilwara style and reflect many carvings, paintings, and mirrors.

•    The beautiful design and construction of a large plaza known as Dussehra Chowk.

•    Patwon Ki Haveli, right outside the old fortress, has beautiful stone carvings, mural paintings, and jails.

Why is the Fort as famous as Sonar Quila?

"Golden Fort" is another name for Jaisalmer Fort. This is because the yellow rock it's made of makes it look golden in the sun. On a sunny day, the fort's walls are a tawny lion's taint. In the evening, they turn a golden honey shade. The fort is even more mysterious when the sun shines and casts a golden glow.
