Somnath Overview

Somnath, roughly meaning 'lord of the moon', is a pilgrim centre home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. It is a town that draws much of its identity from the mythology, religion, and legends surrounding it.

The city is where the three rivers, Hiran, Kapil, and the mythical Saraswathy, get together. Hindus think these rivers flow to their final destination, the sea, so this place is very holy to them. Hindus see this meeting point as a sign of birth, life, and death.

The best time to visit 

Summer is best in Somnath, from June to August. Winter is too cold, from December to March. You should avoid the crowds of tourists and people who come to Somnath, though, if you want to go there when it's not busy. The city is sweltering and humid at these times of the year, so the best time to go is in the winter when the heat is less unbearable.
