History of Matanga Hill

As all ruined places of Hampi contains historical or/and mythological importance, Matanga Hill is of no difference. According to Hindu myths, St. Matanga had cursed Bali when he killed a demon Dundhuvi. Dundhuvi’s son Mayavi challenged Bali into a war. During the war, Bali’s brother Surgiva mistakenly closed the gate of the cave, thinking Bali was dead. Bali furiously leaded a wrath upon Surgiva where Bali was finally defeated after Lord Rama’s intervention. Later, Surgiva was made Monkey King by Lord Rama.
