Vittala Temple Overview
The Vittala Temple, one of the largest and famous exemplars of the Vijayanagar Era is found near the banks of Tungabhadra River in Hampi. King Devaraya II built the iconic Temple whereas later King Krishnadevaraya added significant touch to the ancient monument. Shri Vijaya Vitthala Temple is solely dedicated to an incarnation of Lord Vishnu called Lord Vitthala. The fascinating musical pillars and excellent craftsmanship of the chariot are notably responsible for making it one of the interesting places to visit in Hampi. The predominant stone structures from 15th Century are the main attraction for the tourists.
Architectural Features of Vijaya Vittala Temple
The excellence of Vijayanagar architectures can be witnessed in the Maha Mantapa. The main hall of the Vittala Temple where the Vitthala shrine was placed has an alluring ornate base. There are four smaller halls where other idols are sited. There are several pillars arranged in geometrical shapes with intricately carved of enthralling sculptures of Yali, Narashimha, and other ornamental designs. Amongst the three in whole India, the Stone Chariot (or Ratha) in Hampi is an absolute beauty. It is dedicated to the carrier of Lord Vishnu, Garuda.
The key attraction of Hampi tourism is to treat the eyes with Musical Pillars of Ranga Mantapa. There are 56 SA RE GA MA PA pillars, which when gently tapped; one can hear the melody through them. Every main pillar is adjoined with seven minor ones with distinct musical notes. For centuries, even the British (after cutting down two pillars) couldn’t unravel the mystery behind the musical pillars of Vittala Temple.
Present Condition of Vijaya Vittala Temple
The partially ruined Temple is under extensive care from the Government. They have taken the necessary steps to preserve the magnificent temple by prohibiting tapping the musical pillars. Even the wheels of the chariot are cemented to evade further damage. Several floodlights have been fixed within the Vittala Temple for showcasing grandiosity during the dark. However, the temple doesn’t shelter the shrine of Lord Vittala anymore.
