The first thing that attracts the most to every visitor is the majestic and equally magnificent seven-storeyed Dravidian styled forty-metre high tower built on the top of the temple roof. Laden with innumerable little idols of several forms of the goddess painted beautifully in white and gold. Standing there and watching it is indeed a sight to behold. Tour packages for Mysore include Chamundi hills among their listed destinations to visit.
Two of the major attractions here are the idols of Goddess Chamundeshwari herself, carved majestic pure gold, along with the magnificent one measuring over twenty feet in height of the demi-god Nandi. Welcomed by Lord Ganesha's picture, the temple's inferior structure comprises of the inner pious Antarala enclosed by the pillared Mahamandapa followed by two majestic towers.
The endpoint of the hill located at an altitude of over a thousand meters also witnesses a well-painted image of the mythological figure of Mahishasura whom Chamundi Devi killed. The temple can either be reached by electric vehicles available here or one may take the staircase carved in stone. A little adventure within a religious endeavor won't harm anyone, will it?
Legends
There are a lot of legends associated with the holy temple built in the eleventh century worshipping one the several devotional forms of Goddess Parvati (whose husband is Lord Shiva). Marked as the representative of Goddess Sati's hair which fell at this very spot, the temple naturally becomes a part of the eighteen Shakti Peeths worshipping one of the eighteen parts of the goddess. The deity worshipped with utmost devotion here is that of the brave and ferocious Chamundeshwari Devi which is the formation that Mata took in order to kill the devil- Mahishasura. The site is also famously called 'Krouncha Pitham' among the locals.
With all the legends and physical specifications, the ancient temple can surely not be missed at any cost on your next trip to Mysuru.
