About Anayirankal Dam

The popular site of the concrete dam of Anayirankal falling on the way to Thekkady is one of the most visited spots of the Munnar region attracting innumerable people going through the road halting for some aesthetic refreshment. It is surely one of the best places to visit in Munnar and also among the most Popular places to visit in Kerala.

Anayirangal Dam history

The dam is the meeting spot for elephants that come here for drinking water. The name ‘Anayirangal’ is derived from mixing two words, namely- aana and irangal, meaning elephant and descend. The dam was constructed in the 1960s. 


Being among the first few concrete dams built around Munnar, the spectacular dam is often visited by the locally inhabiting Elephants from the jungle nearby which makes it an exciting sight to behold. People often love to see the giant animals living and enjoying in their natural habitat and making the most of it. The idea of secretly seeing them genuinely lures one into visiting the place. It is one of the rare experiences that just Kerala can offer you right amidst its thickly covered beauty in green.

After visiting the divine site of Devikulam, one may halt at the renowned site of the striking Dam of Anayirankal which by the virtue of its dense green plantations spread in the vast area all-around has become a prime halting spot at the National Highway 49 which you may easily track on your way to Thekkady.

The location can be easily spotted on the way leading towards Pilani or even Thekkady but it can also be visited through modes of public transport conveniently available for the spot here adding to the reason for its never-ending popularity.

People can always capture some natural shots from the heavenly spot. Apart from a long peaceful walk, bird watching, and long breathing sessions, the site allows you the experience of a peaceful boat ride with your friends and family through the shining waters of the island-like area. A full-fledged picnic can be organized here as well with local delicacies being sold all around.
