The Kodamdesar Bhairu Ji temple, also known as the Kodamdesar Bhairav Ji temple, is not a regular temple that people are used to. It lacks a basic structural element which is the roof. The temple is devoted to Bhairav Nath, and it is believed that he was born in the place between the eyebrows, which is why he is also called the third eye of Shiva. It is said that Bhairav is an incarnation of Lord Shiva in his ferocious form.
Lacking the roof, the Kodamdesar Bhairu Ji temple only has the idol, which is on a marbled platform, and two tridents which is the weapon of Kodamdesar Bhairu Ji. The idol is unique itself, with an enigmatic look and ferociousness in its eyes. The idol is said to have a huge appetite which is noticed by the idol's mouth that is wide open. The devotees and pandits offer Prasad into the deity's mouth, and after some mantras, the food is taken out of its mouth and distributed as a Prasad. This temple is offered in various BIKANER TOURISM PACKAGE due to its uniqueness and should definitely be on the list of the PLACES TO VISIT IN BIKANER.
Kodamdesar Bhairu Ji history/Story:
Rao Bika Ji built this temple in the year 1465 AD. He was the ruler and founder of Bikaner city. He originally planned to build his palace around this temple but dropped his plans on the advice of his advisors. There is a very interesting story about this place as told by the pujaris. Locals say that once there was a devotee who wished to bring the idol from Mandore to Jodhpur.
Bhairav Nath was moved by his devotion and allowed it on one condition, he was instructed to not place the idol on the ground while bringing it to Jodhpur, and if he did, he would not be able to lift the idol back again. The devotee agreed, but on his way to Jodhpur, he got tired and placed the idol on the ground forgetting about the instruction, and that was it; he could not lift the idol again no matter how hard he tried; it was rooted to the ground. And then, several years later, Rao Bika Ji built the temple around where it is now.
