Kolleru Lake & Sanctuary is a big freshwater lake that covers 300 square miles between the Krishna and Godavari deltas. Birds that come and go every year live there from October to March. Kolleru Lake is one of the best places to visit in Vijayawada.

The lake is now a Bird Sanctuary and is an excellent place for a picnic and to watch birds. About 20 million local and migrating birds used the lake as an essential place to live.

History

Six hundred seventy-three square kilometres make up the Kolleru Bird Sanctuary. It has a long past that goes back to 1999 when it was created under India's Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The refuge was made to protect birds living there and birds from as far away as Siberia. As people became more aware of the importance of protecting the environment, the region's tourism grew.

Kolleru Bird Sanctuary has become a natural haven, home to India's most comprehensive range of birds. It also helps the sailors who live in the area make a living. The nearby old Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary is also part of the area's rich bird heritage, which gives the sanctuary's history even more depth.

What is Kolleru Lake & Sanctuary famous for?

People know Kolleru Lake as an important wetland in India. It's a place where both local and migrating birds can find food. Kolleru Lake, which is in Andhra Pradesh, is between the Krishna and Godavari deltas. The lake is Asia's most prominent small freshwater lake. The lake is worth visiting during the Vijayawada tour package.

Which two rivers meet at Kolleru Lake?

It's in Andhra Pradesh, between the Krishna and Godavari rivers. Many migrant birds, like the Siberian crane, the ibis, the painted stork, the grey pelican, and others, come to see it. Birds can raise their young here without worrying about danger.

The best time to visit

The best time to visit Kolleru Bird Sanctuary is from October to March, which is winter. During this time, many migratory birds come to Kolleru Lake to get away from the brutal winters where they live and enjoy the mild weather. Because the lake is so big and the environment is so good for birds, it becomes a busy place for birds during these months, giving birdwatchers and nature lovers a great chance to see many species.
