The name of the town now is masulipatnam. It is still one of the most important places for trade on the Coromandel coast and is the governing centre of the Krishna district. masulipatnam is one of the best places to visit in Vijayawada.

The old city of Bandar, meaning "port" in Arabic, has had many other names. It was famous as Masulipatnam, Masula, and even Maesolia in the 1600s. People from Europe came to live there and trade from the 14th century to the 17th century CE. The British, Dutch, and French used it as a market port.

In masulipatnam, selling muslin was the primary way to make money because the Romans liked the fabric. In the state of Madras, the town became the centre of the Krishna district in 1859.
