The name of the town now is Machilipatnam. It is still one of the most important places for trade on the Coromandel coast and is the governing centre of the Krishna district. Machilipatnam is one of the best places to visit in Vijayawada.

The old city of Bandar, meaning "port" in Arabic, has had many other names. It was famous as Masulipatnam, Masula, and even Maesolia in the 1600s. People from Europe came to live there and trade from the 14th century to the 17th century CE. The British, Dutch, and French used it as a market port.

Significance

It might look like you're going to the end of the world as you drive to Machilipatnam Port, where green fields and canals take the place of houses and busy roads. As you drive along the backside of the Bay of Bengal, you see many fishing boats with exciting names like Mister India and Padma Lakshmi. Interestingly, most of these boats fly Indian and Bangladeshi colours.

What is Machilipatnam famous for?

The handloom business in the city is famous for making Kalamkari textiles sent to the US and other Asian countries. Machilipatnam is a must-visit place for the Vijayawada tour package.

What is the second name of Machilipatnam?

It is also famous as Masulipatnam, Bandar, or Masula. It is a city on the Coromandel Coast in southeast India. The Machilipatnam city is in Andhra Pradesh. It is in Krishna District. It is near the river Krishna, in the Bay of Bengal.

History

An explorer, Claudius Ptolemy, says that Machilipatnam, once called Maisolos, has thrived since the 3rd century BCE. In the first century BCE, Machilipatnam was known as Masalia in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a book about sailing. In Machilipatnam, selling muslin was the primary way to make money because the Romans liked the fabric. In the state of Madras, the town became the centre of the Krishna district in 1859.
