Pondicherry Museum is well known for its art and history exhibition in Pondicherry. The museum is exclusively known for the antique collection of fine lost-wax bronzes of the Chola Dynasty. The antique collection also includes 81 pieces of Chola bronze sculptures and is known for one of the largest collections of Chola Bronze. It has got remnants from Southern archaeological dig of India such as Artikamedu, Yavana trading port.
The museum has also got collections of stone sculptures from the Pallava Dynasty and fossilized tree trunks adding more attraction to it. The museum is a famous part of the Pondicherry Tourism.
Location of the museum
The Pondicherry Museum is located in the White Town, Pondicherry. It is situated by one of the most scenic and beautiful streets of Pondicherry i.e. the Easwaran Kovil Street, Canteen st. It is a 1-minute walk away from Bharathi Park.
Attractions
The major attraction spot on the ground floor is the central area. There are 3 interesting transport mechanisms – a palanquin (sedan chair), a coach and an earlier version of the rickshaw i.e. a pousse-pousse which requires two people, one to push and the other to steer. The bronze collections behold images of many gods and goddesses. The collection also displays a huge collection of lamps used in temples of different dynasties. Pre-Christian artifacts like the remaining of antique Greek and Roman jars, handicrafts of the Tsung period in China are beautifully exhibited.
Precious stones and beads made from glass were excavated from the archaeological site, Southern part of Pondicherry. Governor Duplex’s bed is also on show. There are many other appealing rooms in the museum consisting of the Geology room, fossils and shells display rooms, large collections of coins, French furniture, and church relics. Thus, it is among the best places to visit in Pondicherry. The museum is opened every day except for Monday and any National Holidays.
