Sri Karneshwar Nataraja Temple is one of the beautiful yet unique architectural temples in India. If you’re visiting for the first time, you’ll surely catch the resemblance and the inspiration derived from the Pyramids of Egypt. Therefore, it’s built-in a pyramid structure. As the name indicates, Nataraja which is an alternative name of Lord Shiva is solely dedicated to him. In 2000, the deity was initially constructed but the great tsunami in 2004 had crumbled the temple.

It was developed by the Chairman of Auroville Foundation, Dr. Karan Singh. After the destruction, they made the new pyramid-shaped temple into a stronger, bigger, and better than before. The Sri Karneshwar Nataraja Temple is one of the mandatory inclusions in your Pondicherry tour package as you’ll witness the elegant and exquisite work of both deity and architectures. You’ll be surprised to see how the entire edifice has been constructed to face northwards to give rise to maximum positive energy.

Architectures of Sri Karneshwar Nataraja Temple

It’s one of the exciting spot in Pondicherry tourism for its architectural construction. The complete construction of Sri Karneshwar Nataraja Temple is a result of blending Pyramids with our Traditional fashion of temples. The design of the Dome is known as Cloister Dome as it has been constructed in a pointed manner of square shape. Under the dome, the deity of Lord Shiva sits gracefully in a central chamber. Both the dome and pyramid is made with the fusion of concrete cement and CSEB (or colloquially stabilized earth blocks) to make it stronger than before. The roots are buried deep into 1.15m below to survive tsunami.
