The unique experience

The memorial dedicated to the father of our nation stands proudly close to Kanyakumari’s shores and is a place where Gandhiji’s ashes were immersed in the vast sea. One of the most attractive features to catch your attention is the amazing view of the nearby terrain, especially from atop the memorial. Its ‘the place’ for taking photographs of nature’s beauty in all its glory. It is without a doubt, one of the ideal most places to visit in Kanyakumari

About Gandhi Mandapam

Known famously as Gandhi Mandapam, the memorial was constructed as an ode t Gandhi Ji. The place is rich historically as it was here that his ashes were housed in an urn. The Mahatma had visited Kanyakumari in 1925 and 1937, and, after his assassination in 1948, his ashes were transported here to be immersed in the sea. It was in 1956 that the memorial boasting of architectural style from Odisha was constructed and looks unique in every way.

The detailing of the memorial is impeccable. For example, the middle tower represents Gandhi’s age and is 79 feet in height. There is a very peculiar phenomenon that happens every year on Gandhi’s birthday on 2nd October. The rays of the sun tap through a hole lodged on top of the memorial, and make their way down to the patch where the ashes of the Mahatma were housed, thereby lighting it up. Hence, it distinguishes itself as a noteworthy highlight in Kanyakumari tour packages.

More about the place

Inside the memorial is a library that houses magazines, books as well as every related piece of reading that dates back to pre-independent India. Visitors can also see Gandhi’s photographs as well as those of other freedom fighters that laid down their lives for our independence. For those interested, there is a yearly correspondence course on the life of Gandhi and anyone is free to do it. Gujarat Vidyapeeth offers a certificate on its completion. Visitors can also go inside meeting rooms where conferences and films are shown reflecting the work of the Mahatma.

What else?

Since its a memorial built to commemorate Gandhi’s contribution to our freedom struggle, visitors coming here are expected to follow certain rules. They are required to behave in a civilized manner. No food is allowed inside the premises. Also, you cannot take a camera inside as photography is prohibited. One has to leave their footwear outside for which they have to pay Rupee 1 per footwear.

A favorite Kanyakumari tourist place, this memorial will leave your jaws dropping.
