Legend
According to folklore, it was on the Vivekananda Rock where Devi Kanya Kumari or virgin Parvati observed penance in order to marry Lord Shiva but was unsuccessful in marrying him. Due to this tragic happening, the Devi promised herself that she would remain a virgin all through her life. The food prepared for her wedding transformed into colorful shells and conches, whereas, her sindoor colored the sand of the beach in various hues.
