The unique experience

If you’re in search of a spot that fills you up with freshness and offers you peace, then you must travel to Mathur Aqueduct. It is South Asia’s longest built aqueduct standing at 115 feet in height. It is also the highest. The most interesting fact about this aqueduct is that it ended water shortage problem in the surrounding tehsils and is one of Kanyakumari’s most visited places. The serenity of the adjoining Western Ghats catches your attention the moment you come here.

About

A hanging bridge or trough, it was erected in 1966 on the River Pahrali. It was basically constructed to remove water shortage in the area as well as to boost irrigation. Nestled amidst unparalleled pristine terrain encapsulated by the mystical Western Ghats, the bridge is positioned in Vilavancode Taluk. The name ‘Mathur’ was given to it due to its close proximity to a village named ‘Mathoor’. The trough’s entire weight is bolstered with the help of 28 gigantic columns. Water is transported all the way from Pattanamkal Canal to various adjoining areas. A marvel of engineering, this Aqueduct is parted into two, making its structure noteworthy. One is a road, and the other is a bridge. Therefore, it stands out as a significant attraction in Kanyakumari tour packages.

More about the place

The trough is visited in large numbers by tourists as its a marvelous spot. If one stands at the center of the trough, they can enjoy a view of the verdant lushness all around along with the Pahrali River that looks stunning as it twists and winds its way across the hilly terrain. The authorities have also built stairs for quick accessibility. Apart from a children’s park, there are quite a few bathing platforms for people to spend a couple of enjoyable hours here.

What else?

Though the place is well known among tourists, there are no direct bus services to reach the trough. Therefore, it is advised to travel by your pre-booked vehicle or your own transport. If you have a bucket list of top places to visit in Kanyakumari, then it must definitely be on your itinerary.
