About Vivekananda Rock Memorial

The Rock Memorial was constructed in honor of Swami Vivekananda in the year 1970. It is here that this world-famous swami achieved enlightenment. It consists of Shripada Mandapam and the Vivekananda Mandapam. Visitors come here to understand the life and works of the great Vivekananda and his preaching. The spot is perfect for meditating.

If it is to be believed, Goddess Kumari did penance on this rock in order to marry the lord of the lords ‘Shiva’. As per local legend, it is on this rock that the Devi in her virgin avatar meditated and observed self-discipline.

The year 1970 saw the construction of this massive structure that was constructed at a whopping cost of 1 crore and 35 lakhs. It was on this rock that the great spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda meditated, and it is called Sripada Parai. The Mandapam of the memorial mimics the architectural style adopted at Belur’s Ramakrishna Temple. However, the entrance boasts of designs that draw inspiration from the architectural style of Ajanta and Ellora.
