The Pancha Rathas of Mahabalipuram are one of the most famous places to visit in Tamil Nadu. The meaning of “Pancha Rathas” is five Chariots. So, here you will find a group of 5 Monolithic  Rock cut temples. All the temples have very beautiful style architecture. The carvings and architecture of the temples are amazing. Pancha Rathas has also been added to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mahabalipuram. The five temples in Pancha Rathas are dedicated to the five Pandeyas brothers. All five temples have unique styles, and the name of the temples is given on the name of the Pandavas brothers.

The first temple is the Dharma Raja Ratha temple. This temple is dedicated to Yudhishthira, who is the eldest brother among the Pandavas. The roof of the temple is built in a pyramid style, and the stairs lead to a small chamber. In the chamber, you will find a stone throne. It is believed that Yudhishthira used to sit on the throne. 

The second temple is known as Bhima Ratha. Bhima Ratha temple is dedicated to the second brother of the Pandayas, Bheem. The temple looks like a massive chariot with elephants in the front. 

The third temple among the Panch Rathas is Arjuna Ratha. This temple is dedicated to Arjuna. The temple is created in such a way that it resembles a large square pavilion with beautiful carving present on the walls. The carvings on the walls comprise various mythical and Hindu creatures. 

The fourth temple that is present in the Pancha Rathas is the Nakula Saha Deva Ratha. This temple is dedicated to the fourth and fifth Panda brothers who are Nakul and Sahadev. The temple resembles a hut, along with a small chamber.

The name of the fifth temple is the Draupadi Radha. The temple is dedicated to the Pandava’s brother's wife, Draupadi. The temple resembles a small Shine, which has stairs that lead to a small chamber. The chamber consists of a statue of Draupadi. 

Which dynasty built the Pancha Rathas of Mahabalipuram

The Pancha Rathas of Mahabalipuram was constructed by the Pallavas dynasty from the 3rd Century CE to 9 century CE. It is believed that Pallavas were having great love for art and architecture. Hence, during their rule of the Mahabalipuram, they contributed a lot toward the development of the area in art and architecture. Narasimhavarman 1 was one of the great rulers of the Pandavas dynasty. He built the famous Pancha Ratha temple and along with that various other famous temples also in Mahabalipuram like the Shore temple.
