History of Hatakeswaram

The temple was built sometime between the years 11th and 13th. It also plays an essential role in history. It is the spot from which the famous philosopher and saint Sri Sankaracharya wrote one of his main works.

According to the temple story, a potter was a big devotee of Lord Shiva. He was a simple man with a simple life. He was going to give the travellers all of his food. Lord Shiva showed up as a pilgrim to try him and begged him for food one day. The potter sadly didn't have any food left in the house. He prayed to Lord Shiva because he felt terrible that he couldn't give the travellers food.

He showed up in a pot, happy with his unwavering dedication. The incident became famous, and because of it, the temple got its name, "Atika." The word "Atika" means "piece of pot." Lately, the name Atikeswaram has become Hatakeswaram.
