The holy Srisailam is very old and has a lot of historical importance. There are many holy churches, Ashrams, Mutts, bodies of water, and beautiful scenery in this holy area. Because of this, people think that Siddhis and the most devoted followers of Lord Shiva make the journey from the Himalayas to Srisailam to pray to Mallikarjuna Swamy. Sikharam is worth the visit during the Srisailam tour package.
There is a 2830-foot difference in height between Sikharam and the rest of the Srisailam Hills. In the Skanda Purana, it says that just looking at this Sikharam can free a person's soul from the bonds of life. In the past, people walked to Srisailam, and those who couldn't make it to the shrine came back after seeing this peak. The road between Srisailam Temple and Srisailam Dam is about 3 km away. It is one of the best places to visit in Srisailam.
Architecture
It faces east and has a chamber, a prayer hall, and a hall that faces the front. The temple looks like a hilly cave where many people pray to the god. The chamber is bigger than the prayer hall, and the hall that faces the front has sixteen columns. It is Nandi. He is in the middle of the hall that faces the front, between four columns. A path with three sides can be seen on the inside of the wall that faces the front.
What is the story of Sikharam in Srisailam?
It is where the ancient stone Sikhareswaram Temple is situated. It has a Garbhagriha, an Antaralaya, and a Mukhamanda with 16 columns. The name of the god here is Veera Sankara Swamy, but people here call him Sikhareswara Swamy.
In history, the Reddy Kings built a set of steps leading up to this temple in 1398 AD. They also built a tank here called Pushkarini. From this spot, you can see the whole temple complex of Srisailam, as well as the winding Krishna River.
