Valiyathura Pier

The Unique Experience

One cannot understand why Valiyathura Pier makes people go weak in their knees unless and until they make a personal visit, and see with their naked eyes the true beauty of this place. Trivandrum’s most visited hub, the pier looks like an abode of the gods. Its a nook perfect to view the majestic and expansive Arabian Sea under the canopy of the blue sky that keeps changing hues from time to time. Come here during sunsets that are regarded as one of the most spectacular in all of Kerala. Click a few intimate shots of the surrounding landscape and take back memorable experiences. So, if you are planning to go for the Trivandrum tour packages, just have a try to visit this beautiful place also.

About Valiyathura Pier Kovalam

The once 703 foot pier is a sight to behold as it rests on top of 127 columns of pure concrete and is almost sixty years old. Steel and cement were used to construct the whole structure of the pier. It's a massive structure that has given a lot of recognition to Kerala Tourism as its thronged in pretty large numbers by travellers from every nook of the country. The evening twilight is the best time to see the sky transform itself into an ‘orangish’ toned canopy. Known earlier as the pride of Kovalam, the pier is still considered an important hub in Kerala’s touristic circuit and features as one of the topmost places to visit in Trivandrum

Legend

This port was used for trading spices since Biblical times and later became the greatest port of the Kingdom of Travancore. As recorded in a fiction novel ‘Marthandavarma’, the fishing community of Valiyathura once gave shelter and protection to Ettuveetil Pillamar during the battle between them and Mathanda Varma.

More About the Place

Since the time it was deserted, this once upon a time port now attracts not just tourists but also local fishermen that come to float their catamarans in the rainy season. They catch local fishes like Malavu that are considered a delicacy in the region. Anglers too come here to catch other fishes like Para and Kanava. Though the structure of the pier looks weak, it has withstood the trials of time with pride.

What else?

Since the structure of the pier has deteriorated over a period of time, it is better to be careful while walking. Most people gather here during the evening to see the sunset. That is why its better if one visits it early in the morning to enjoy the tranquility of this place.
