About Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium

Closely located at merely 2 kilometers from Kovalam, this aquarium is a crowd puller. It is also regarded as one of the best places to visit in Trivandrum. Its official name is Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium and is home to rare fish species such as moon wrasse, squirrelfish, and clownfish. Apart from fish, you can also spot many kinds of invertebrates as well as corals of various colours. Giant turtles are also to be seen at this 1997 constructed aquarium. Marine lovers find this spot quite intriguing as they can take a tour and see for themselves how pearls are produced by using shell cement. You can witness how after implanting a cement mold into an oyster creates a beautifully shaped pearl within two to three months' time.

Vizhinjam’s busiest port houses this amazing aquarium that tops the list of tourist places in Trivandrum to be visited. Marine enthusiasts find this place informative for here they are able to see unique marine life, unlike other places. Eels, piranhas, and lionfish are preserved here. The molds that are used to create the unique pearls inside oyster shells are of varied types, not seen elsewhere.

Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium and hatchery Kovalam, Kerala

When here, do make a point to visit the backyard where giant turtles are seen lazing around. There are also big tanks filled with fish. Also, there is a hatchery where sea fish are bred. The aquarium is the first of its kind to breed Anthias fish in India. But visitors are not allowed inside. One can take cameras inside by paying extra. One can complete the tour of the aquarium in one hour.
