Description about Vellayani Lake

Trivandrum’s most gargantuan freshwater lake is Vellayani Lake, nestled just 7 kilometers from Kovalam and sprawls more than 7.5 acres in area. The Agricultural University of Vellayani houses this lake that has become a signature spot for many travelers coming down to Kerala. The water from this lake is used for agriculture as well as for drinking. Boating is the most preferred form of water sports at this lake that is surrounded by the lush green backwaters and swaying coocnut trees. Lotuses fill this lake to refresh the souls of visitors. Legend

Locals believe in a legend or a myth that a meditating saint once found a beggar begging for water as his bowl was empty. On seeing this, he incanted a prayer, throwing the last drops of the water from the bowl to the land. With the powers of this prayer, the land where the drops of water fell eventually transformed into this lake.
