About Zoological Gardens
Regarded as one among the best places to visit in Trivandrum, the zoo is a major crowd puller. It is one of the best-maintained zoos in the country and like many others was established by the King of Travancore in 1859. Positioned 4 kilometers from Trivandrum central, the zoo is spread on more than 55 acres of area and houses at least 82species of animals. Some animals are from India while others are brought from foreign lands. The forested landscape entices visitors. Along with animals, there is a reptile house and aviary built at this zoo.
More About the Place
Thanks to the efforts of King Marthanda Varma, the King of Travancore and General Cullen that the zoo came into being in 1855. However, it was his older brother King Swathi Thirunal Maharaj who paved the way for the establishment of the zoo. He had a personal collection of elephants in his center for horse breeding. He added panthers, tigers, deer, cheetahs and bears to his collection. In the year 1859, the zoo was established along with a park so as to draw people.
There are in all 82 species of animals at the zoo. Visitors can spot NilgiriLangur, zebras, Royal Bengal Tiger, leopards, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceros, and Cape Buffalos here. The reptilian population comprises of both venomous and non-venomous snakes. There are seven anacondas for visitors to see and be left awestruck.
