Kirti Stambh / Tower of Fame
The Kirti Stambh or the Tower of Fame is a large historical tower located inside the Chittor Fort, in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. This tower is dedicated to the first Tirthankara of Jainism, ‘Rishabhadeva’ or ‘Rishabhanatha’, making it one of the most important monuments for the followers of Jainism. A quick tour plan of this tower can be found listed in various CHITTORGARH TOURISM PACKAGES as it is a popular destination for people who visit the Chittorgarh Fort and also the nearby Vijay Stambh. The tower features various inscriptions mentioning names like Dharmakirti, Shubhakirti and Vasantkirti. The tower is seven storeyed and has a diameter of 33 feet. The Tower of Fame flaunts intricate carvings and sculptures from top to bottom. This tower is a very important historical site and should definitely be on your list of places to visit Chittorgarh.
Kirti Stambh built by:
The tower stands 72 feet high from the ground and was built by Jeeja Bhagerwala, who was a Jain merchant during the reign of King Rawal Kumar Singh, somewhere between 1179-1191 CE. The tower features some inscriptions that mention Jija of Bagherwal as the builder. The Kirti Stambh was also an important location of a ‘Bhattaraka’, or a traditional Jain head who leads Jain institutions and trains scholars. The Tower of Fame is built in the Solanki style of architecture which is also known as the ‘Maru-Gurjara architecture’ or ‘Chalukya style’ of architecture.
