The famous Fort Chanwa of Jodhpur, has a very interesting and intricate history behind it. The Fort stands tall today , owing to the reviving efforts of Maharaja Dalip Singh and Rani Madhu Devi, who helped give the Fort a new identity altogether after years of neglect. This Fort which is now a Heritage Hotel attracts many tourists worldwide and should definitely be on the lists of places to visit in Jodhpur city and nearby. Many JODHPUR PACKAGES provide for a luxurious and royal stay at Fort Chanwa along with the tour plans of Jodhpur city and its wonders. The Fort with its red sandstone architecture and classic Rajasthani ‘Jharokas’ is definitely an eye catcher.

History of Fort Chanwa

Years ago, during the time of Maharajah Jaswant Singh II, who ruled Marwar during the years 1876 to 1895 a certain prominent civil servant named Kaviraj Muraridanji was awarded with a hamlet as ‘Jagir’. Jagir is actually a piece of land or territory awarded to somebody to honour them for their work in military operations and other operations central to the kingdom and administration. This being done, Muraridanji built a beautiful ‘haveli’ or mansion on the land. But in the later years (particularly in the year 1941) this land and mansion came under the clutches of the state as Muraridanji fell victim to one of his own irrevocable laws. The law stated that feudal states which lack a male successor or lack any recognized adoption in the lifetime of any deceased ‘Jagirdar’ (owner of a Jagir), would automatically go under state and its management.

Following this, in the year 1948, this land was again granted as Jagir to Maharajah Dalip Singh, the youngest son of Maharajah Umaid Singh. However, the Fort and mansion continued to be overlooked and was already on the brink of being a lost cause. But soon in the year 1992, when Rajasthan began to see an increased interest worldwide as a well-known tourism centre Maharajah Dalip Singh, the 24th descendant of Rao Jodha, the famous ruler who established Jodhpur, decided to take action and introduce Fort Chanwa to the world of tourism.

Today with the efforts of Maharajah Dalip Singh and Rani Madhu Devi, Fort Chanwa has been turned into a beautiful Heritage Hotel whose gates have been opened for tourists all over the world who want to live and experience the royal Rajasthani heritage. The Fort has even partnered with Asvari Hotels & Suites for Private and Exclusive Dinners and Extended Stay at the Fort Chanwa.
