The Kalyana Lake or Kaylana Lake is a beautiful artificial lake situated about 8 kilometres to the west of the main Jodhpur city area. Among all the beautiful places to visit in Jodhpur city, this should definitely be on your list. The lake was built by Pratap Singh in the year 1872. Kalyana Lake is a great place for relaxation and even birdwatching. Tourists are often drawn to this lake even if they had no plans of  specifically visiting the site , sometimes even on their way to Jaisalmer city. This lake is often already included in JODHPUR TOUR PACKAGES.

Kalyana Lake History

As mentioned previously, the Kalyana Lake is a manmade lake built by Pratap Singh which is why it is sometimes referred to as the ‘Pratap Sagar’. This lake was actually built after destroying the several gardens and palaces constructed by earlier ancient rulers , Bhim Singh and Takhat Singh. Spread over an area of about 84-kilometre squares , the Kalyana Lake has a depth of about 35-50 feet, which depends on the varying water levels throughout the year.

Kalyana Lake Boating

The lake’s water flows from the Hati Canal and is further connected to the Indira Gandhi Canal. The outflow of this lake goes to the Takhat Sagar and the Umaid Sagar. Visitors who wish to go to this place can also enjoy the boating activities which are available here. Boating here can be really fun and soothing, provided the vast expanse of the lake and the surrounding Acacia trees ,which only add to the beauty of the flora and fauna of this place.

Kalyana Lake Timings

Another interesting fact about the Kalyana Lake is that, this artificial lake is the only source of drinking water to the city of Jodhpur and some other areas. Birdwatching enthusiasts would be happy to know that many kinds of birds including the Siberian Crane can be spotted here frequently. Thus, the best time to visit this place is preferably during the winter months when Birdwatching would be something that can be looked forward to. Apart from that, the lake is open for visits throughout the year and is never really crowded owing to its large area.
