Toorji ka Jhalra is considered to be the finest step well in the whole of India. It was built in the 1940s by Maharaja Abhay Singh's consort. She was continuing the tradition that Royal women would build public water works. This well offers water throughout the year. Among all the places to visit in Jodhpur, Toorji ka Jhalra should definitely be visited. The well was recently cleaned and restored as it was full of debris for decades. During the cleaning the excavation team had to go down over two hundred feet where they found handcrafted treasures in rose-red sandstone, dancing elephants, medieval lions and cows and water sprouts and niche housings deities long gone. Best time to visit this place remains early mornings as by midday there are a bunch of local children who come here to dip and dive into the cool waters of Toorji ka Jhalra. Maintaining the tanks is purely volunteer work and they do a great job as well, there are also fishes in the tank which are well fed by the locals.
Architecture of Toorji ka Jhalra
Just like every other stepwell, Toorji ka Jhalra was designed to accommodate the fluctuating water table. The well is made up of rose red sandstone and has many flights of stairs which lead to the water table which is more than a couple hundred feets. Originally to draw water from the well, bullocks help to drive the Persian wheel in a circle over the platform on the top to draw water. The walls of the well have some elegant carvings but the structure is mostly simple but quite impeccable. One should unquestionably add this place in their JODHPUR TOUR PACKAGE
